Development Background

Automobile manufacturers are engaged in fierce competition to reduce the weights of automotive bodies and onboard parts as one measure to improve automobile fuel efficiency.

Hitachi Chemical produces a product that contributes to vehicle weight reduction: a resin back door module. It is no less safe than traditional steel back doors, but offers a significant 38% weight reduction.

There are still many opportunities for weight reduction. One of these is the weight reduction of automotive glass. Achieving this target is possible if sufficient strength is given to glass that is thinner and lighter compared to conventional automotive glass. By adding strong shock-absorbing features to glass intermediate films, the strength and impact resistance of the glass should be retained even if the glass is thinner. Motivated by this idea, Hitachi Chemical began development of our shock-absorbing resin.

Gaps in Technology

Hitachi Chemical had previously commercialized transparent resin for use in glass displays. It is injected between the LCD module and the touch sensor to improve the screen clarity of various electronic devices including smart phones and tablets. We believed that we could applying the fundamental technology to develop an intermediate film for laminated automotive glass. Researchers immediately began prototyping.

Although achieving high transparency visibility and adhesiveness were achieved in initial prototypes, researchers faced a problem: how to increase the shock-absorbing features of the resin compared to conventional materials so that the weight (thickness) of automotive glass could be reduced.
